Lane And Lanae Is Live On Squarespace

Sisters Alesse Lanae and Melissa Lane grew up playing dress-up in their grandmother's closet, where their passion for fine jewelry began. After realizing how priceless their grandmother's jewelry was, Alesse and Melissa were inspired to re-design one of her rings into rings for themselves and their mom. From there, a passion and appreciation for the craft developed within the sisters and Lane + Lanae was born.

Restyling our Etoile Template around their GORGEOUS jewelry was such an inspiration! Alesse and Melissa provided beautiful content and imagery for their site, so we hoped to create a design to compliment their brand beautifully. We love how sleek and refined the design is, which lets the jewelry SHINE.

Check out our Q&A with Alesse & Melissa of Lane & Lanae

The sisters share their thoughts on how running their own business has afforded them a better work/life balance!

"Sometimes we just want to be guided to exactly what should be, but in the end we have to trust that what we’re drawn to and what we end up creating is right."

GO LIVE: WHERE DID YOUR PASSION FOR THE INDUSTRY OR CRAFT START?

Alesse and Melissa: Our passion for fine jewelry started in our grandma’s closet. We would play dress up, trying on layers of fashion and fine jewelry. It wasn’t until we got older that we realized how priceless some of those pieces were! We developed an appreciation for the quality and craft that went into fine jewelry and started designing our own pieces, starting with our grandma’s ring, which we redesigned into matching rings for the two of us and our mom.

GO LIVE: DID YOUR EDUCATION HELP PREPARE YOU FOR THE INDUSTRY? OR ARE YOU SELF-TAUGHT?

Alesse and Melissa: We have always been encouraged to be creative, so when we chose our majors and career paths, we were compelled to keep on that route. Alesse has a background in fine art and design, and Melissa has a background in cinematic arts and design. As far as running a business—we’re self-taught!

GO LIVE: WHAT'S THE HARDEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED IN YOUR BUSINESS?

Alesse & Melissa: The hardest lesson for us is that there are no wrong answers. Sometimes we just want to be guided to exactly what should be, but in the end we have to trust that what we’re drawn to and what we end up creating is right.

GO LIVE: WHAT DO YOU WISH SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU WHEN YOU STARTED OUT?

Alesse & Melissa: We wish someone had told us that having your own business that’s also a passion means never really going home for the day. Since we both live and work together, we have to make a conscious effort to leave our work baggage at the door because it’s so natural to fall back into work mode.

GO LIVE: WHAT WAS THE MOMENT YOU HAD WHEN YOU SAID "I SHOULD DO THIS" OR WHAT MADE YOU TAKE THE JUMP INTO WORKING FOR YOURSELF?

Alesse & Melissa: Both of us were working 9 to 5s and felt creatively drained by the end of our work days. We were at points in our lives and careers where we wanted full creative control and to put our heart into something personal. It was somewhat of a “now or never” conversation!

GO LIVE: WHAT THINGS HAVE YOU GAIN, OR DO YOU HOPE TO GAIN, FROM FOLLOWING THIS DREAM?

Alesse & Melissa: Even though it can be harder to turn off our work minds at the end of the day, in general we feel like running our own business has afforded us a healthier work-life balance. We still hustle and put the business first, but there’s also been a shift in our thinking of what makes up a healthy lifestyle, and how to incorporate that into a busy day or week.

GO LIVE: WHY DID YOU ULTIMATELY DECIDE TO WORK WITH US FOR YOUR RESTYLE?

Alesse & Melissa: We stumbled upon Go Live’s site and were immediately engaged with the content and design. We found ourselves going back again and again. And that’s what we ultimately wanted people to do when they came to our site!
